The Equalizer is the power of prayer

My son passed the written portion of the Tennessee State Drivers license test in March of last year. Actually it was March 8. I remember the day well as there were almost no other folks at the DMV but us. We simply went in and he took the test. These days it’s a bit harder for young folks to obtain and keep a drivers license.

If under the age of 18, a written and signed certificate of 180 hours of driving experience must be supplied before their physical driving abilities can be tested.

I have a license to drive issued by the state of Tennessee which now falls under Home Land Security. Home Land Security is not state but federal.

Back in the day all we had to do to obtain a license was pass the written portion of the test and drive around the park with the officer in our vehicle.

Did you catch that?

Back in the day all we had to do to obtain a license was pass the written portion of the test and drive around the park with the officer in our vehicle.

Well, let me just tell you, many things have changed in regards to obtaining a driver’s license.

But, there is this one thing which remains the same.

Just like back in the day … one still has to navigate the physical portion of the test with the officer in the vehicle, and he is no back seat kind of officer.

As a matter of fact, here in America, the officer sits in the right hand seat.

Last week, we talked about The Gift of Christ and Criminal Minds.

This week I would like to begin our focus on our winter subject matter.

And since this subject matter is neither a person nor a place.

We are going to refer to this subject as a vehicle.

Driving a car is not my favorite thing. And, since I have no idea of what kind of vehicle you prefer.

I am going to give our subject matter, our vehicle a name.

Last week, we talked about The Gift of Christ and Criminal Minds.

This week our subject matter is …The Equalizer

The Equalizer of pride, position, prejudice, poverty, prosperity and privilege is the power of prayer.

The power of prayer is The Equalizer.

Prayer is the only way to posture our petitions in view of an all wise, all knowing, almighty God.

The road, the High Way if you will to God is through Jesus, His one and only son and the vehicle by which one navigates to the one who created all things is called prayer.

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Romans 12:12

But here is the thing …

Prayer is not a vehicle we gas up to drive on Sunday Mornings and Wednesday Nights.

Prayer is not a vehicle we get behind the wheel … without first consulting the manual.

Prayer is not a covered in the garage type of vehicle.

Prayer is not a fly by night air plane.

Prayer is more like a slow moving train.

Lord, you are righteous, but this day we are covered with shame–the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, both near and far, in all the countries where you have scattered us because of our unfaithfulness to you. Daniel 9:7

Prayer is more like a slow moving train,

which navigates tracks which crisscross our country.

Prayer is more like a slow moving train,

which navigates tracks which crisscross our counties.

Prayer is more like a slow moving train,

which navigates tracks which crisscross our cities.

Prayer is more like a slow moving train,

which navigates tracks which crisscross our communities.

Prayer is more like a slow moving train,

which navigates tracks which crisscross our churches.

Prayer is more like a slow moving train,

which navigates tracks which crisscross our children.

The Equalizer of pride, position, prejudice, poverty, prosperity and privilege is the power of prayer.

Prayer is a slow moving train which is our heritage.

I love the LORD, because He hears          My voice and my supplications.

Because He has inclined His ear to me,          Therefore I shall call upon Him as long as I live. Psalms 116:1-2

Sometimes the train of prayer just sits on the tracks.

Sometimes the train of prayer remains standing on the tracks.

Sometimes the train of prayer uses raises hands while standing still on the tracks.

And sometimes the train of prayer has the audacity to kneel on bended knees … on the tracks.

But folks, family and friends prayer playtime is over!

The time out bell has sung its last song.

It’s time for the train of prayer to lay prostrate on the tracks.

It’s time for the train of prayer to lay prostrate on the tracks in the middle of the night.

It’s time for the train of prayer to lay prostrate on the tracks in the light of the day.

It’s time for the train of prayer to lay prostrate on the tracks this very winter.

It’s time for the train of prayer to lay prostrate on the tracks for such a time as this.

The Equalizer of pride, position, prejudice, poverty, prosperity and privilege is the power of prayer.

The house in which we live will not get us there.

The husband we love will not take us there.

Our children we adore will not meet us there.

Our brokenness will not keep us there.

Our rightness will not help us there.

Our bank account will not fund us there.

And, friend … might I add what the world sees as our rebellion …

… will not in no way, shape, form or fashion keep us from going there.

But what will get us there and keep us there is being in a right relationship with the one and only.

The Equalizer of pride, position, prejudice, poverty, prosperity and privilege is the power of prayer.

However, with all that being said, what I stopped by to tell you today is this …

When we pray to our Father in Heaven for anything and everything …

In this and every season we must give Him a reason.

Yes, I am reminded of that En Vogue track- “Giving Him Something He Can Feel”

That’s right, I said it, Give Him something He can feel.

That’s right, I said it, Give Our Father in Heaven something He can feel.

Give our Father in Heaven a reason to answer your prayer.

Give Our Father in Heaven something He can feel.

To let Him know your love is real.

Give our Father in Heaven a reason to answer your prayer.

Yes, like a child!

Give our Father in Heaven a reason to answer your prayer.

Like Hezekiah

Now, LORD our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone, LORD, are God.” 2 Kings 19:19

In 2017 we don’t need to activate something!

In 2017 we ain’t got time to turn up on nothing!

In 2017 we don’t need to

eliminate,

annihilate,

obliterate

or terminate anyone!

What we need to do in 2017 is rekindle a thing.

What we need to do in 2017 is to reignite a thing.

What we need to do is set fire to a thing sitting on the tracks like a box car without a destination.

What we need to do is set fire to a thing standing on the tracks like a box car without cooperation.

What we need to do is set fire to a thing walking on the tracks like a box car without communication.

What we need to do is set fire to a thing laying on the tracks like a box car without a connection.

The Equalizer of pride, position, prejudice, poverty, prosperity and privilege is the power of prayer.

So, now that we know what the power of prayer is.

We need to remember what the power of prayer is not.

Remember earlier when we talked about back in the day?

You know, we just love to talk about back in the day?

Remember we mentioned the one thing which remains the same?

Just like back in the day … one still has to navigate the physical portion of the test with an officer in the vehicle, and he is no back seat kind of officer.

Remember we talked about the fact that, here in America, the DMV officer sits in the right hand seat of the vehicle while you navigate the course …Well, that officer has a name.

Who else do we know that sits on the right hand of the Father?

Who else do we know exists with more than one name?

Yes, I am speaking of Jesus.

God’s one and only son.

John says that “if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.”

As a matter of fact …

He is also the Captain.

For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. Hebrews 2:10 (KJV)

As a matter of record …

He is the Chief.

And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; Ephesians 2:20 (KJV)

As a matter of record …

He is the Counselor.

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 (KJV)

As a matter of record …

He is our Consolation.

And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. Luke 2:25 (KJV)

As a matter of record …

And friends As a matter of record …

He is the Commander.

Behold, I have given him for a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people. Isaiah 55:4 (KJV)

He sits in on the right hand of The Father.

Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Romans 8:34 (ESV)

The vehicle we now refer to as The Equalizer.

The power of prayer is The Equalizer.

And whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son (John 14:13).

The Equalizer moves us from here to there.

If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you (John 15:7).

Our licensed to navigate this prayer vehicle is a right relationship with the one and only.

Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be made full (John 16:24).

We’ve been vehicle hopping and shopping for decades.

We will lease a vehicle for a while then turn it back in.

Now, they have made it where we don’t even have to commit.

Now, we can even rent a vehicle for a day.

Now, it’s a super easy way to purchase a vehicle without a price.

It is called tote the note.

That’s right for a small down payment we can navigate a tote the note.

The Good News is a licensed to navigate your very own

vehicle of prayer is a right relationship with the one and only.

You ain’t got to ask nobody for permission!

You ain’t got to post it on Face Book!

You ain’t got to send it to instagram.

You ain’t got to reduce it to 140 characters to tweet it on tweeter.

The Good News is prayer is a standard shift type of vehicle, which moves us from here to there. And we can use this very vehicle to reset our destination as we cooperate, communicate and connect to the only one that really matters in this our one life.

The Equalizer of pride, position, prejudice, poverty, prosperity and privilege is the power of prayer.

May God be the glory in your everyday story of this little big thing we call life.

Only Christ and the Criminal prayed on a cross on a hill called Calvary

Last night, I almost added another gift to the Christmas gift bag. Yes, you heard me right, I did not stutter. My little family has yet to have Christmas. We’ve yet to sit down or gather together as a family to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. You see our family has been divided since February of 2015.

And like Bey, these days I’m singing

I’aint sorry.

Jesus said it would be this way. Jesus said He himself would be the dividing force. He said this more than two thousand years ago as He walked this earth fully man and fully God. Jesus said and Doctor Luke reports details.

Jesus said “Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth, No I tell you but rather division.” Luke 12:51

Jesus divides to multiply His Kingdom.

This is His end goal!

Only Jesus divides then multiplies.

Yes, Jesus is a mathematician.

He simply divides to multiply.

Let’s take the woman at the well for example …

She was alone with Jesus at the well.

When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)  John 4:7 (KJV)

After some time alone with Jesus at the well, the woman forgot what she thought she came to the well for. We know this because she leaves the well without her water jug.

Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” They came out of the town and made their way toward him. John 4:28-30 (KJV)

Jesus divides to multiply His Kingdom.

This is His end goal!

Only Jesus divides then multiplies.

What about Nicodemus?

Nicodemus came to Jesus in the dark of night, Alone.

He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.” John 3:2

 What about the Royal official?

Jesus directed the royal official to go and your son will live.

The Royal official later found his son at home alive.

The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.” The man took Jesus at his word and departed.  While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. John 49-51

The Other Criminal

Jesus divides to multiply His Kingdom.

This is His end goal!

Only Jesus divides then multiplies.

Jesus divides to multiply His Kingdom and not even the promise of death nor prayer on the cross kept Him from going there …

The force of His divinity divided even the two criminals on the cross into two camps.

Criminal Minds

One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”

But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”

Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom

Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Only Christ and the criminal prayed on a cross on a hill called Calvary.

Jesus divides to multiply His Kingdom and not even the promise of death nor prayer on the cross kept Him from going there …

No, we’ve not un-wrapped our Christmas gifts but we know the Gift of Christmas and His name is Jesus, God’s One and Only Son.

So, after all the gifts of Christmas are

Un-wrapped

Un-boxed

Un-bagged

Un-loaded

Only the gift of Jesus can never be contain or commandeered to a single day in any given year.
